About the forum

The “Emerging Societies – Emerging Philanthropies” International Forum is a unique invitation-only event, which will bring together leading philanthropy practitioners from Brazil, China, India, Mexico, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, and the South East Asian, African and Arab regions. The overall goal of the forum is to stimulate mutual learning and debate among philanthropists and foundation practitioners, and to provide a platform for future cooperation and peer exchange. The forum hosted the founders and directors of philanthropic foundations and institutions, be they private, corporate or community-based, as well as major philanthropists. Numbers are strictly limited to no more than 100 people, with a maximum of 8-10 participants from each country or region. The forum provided opportunities for informal gatherings and interactive discussions among participants. Over the course of two days, debate will take place on themes such as: how social change is understood and could be achieved in emerging societies; where relations between governments and philanthropists could lead; how challenge of sustaining philanthropy beyond first generations of donors are met in different giving cultures and how philanthropic values are communicated in different societies.

Background

The idea of an annual forum on philanthropy in emerging markets came out of a meeting of the trustees of the Philanthropy Bridge Foundation (PBF) in January 2012. The PBF had an ambitious programme of work and following the sad death of its founder, Olga Alexeeva, those involved directly, or as partners or stakeholders, convened together in London to ensure that this important work was continued. PBF was set up to promote philanthropy in emerging markets and worked to coordinate, on a global level, collaboration, partnership and thought leadership across philanthropy practitioners in the emerging world. At this meeting, a working group was formed to take the idea of an annual emerging market philanthropy forum forward. Held in Peterhof, St. Petersburg, the forum honours the legacy of Olga Alexeeva and her life long commitment to developing philanthropy in Russia and other emerging economies. The forum will also host the first award ceremony for the Olga Alexeeva Memorial Prize, sponsored by Alliance magazine, where the winner will deliver a keynote speech.
